On November 20, 1799, the village of Criação Velha was designated as a civil parish in its own right. On the same date, the church of Nossa Senhora das Dores was also elevated to a parish church, following a petition to build a new chapel, as the Rosário chapel was clearly insuffic
ient to accommodate the believers.
The square, whose name celebrates the most symbolic date in the history of the civil parish, comprises a sloping, vast avenue of hybrid plane trees (Platanus x acerifolia) connecting the road with the church of Nossa Senhora das Dores, where it is preceded by a huge araucaria tree (Araucaria heterophylla) and a bandstand. The dense shade of the leafy trees invites us to relax on one of the benches.
