The house of the Holy Spirit in the civil parish of Criação Velha was built in 1902 around the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows. It has a façade with a perfect arched door, topped by a curved pediment showing its founding date, the crown of the Holy Spirit, and a pair of doves.
Its proximity to the square where the feasts of Pentecost Sunday and Holy Spirit Monday take place allows it to provide support in guarding the cult's insignia and sharing the meat, bread, and rosquilhas (sweetbreads) that are distributed.
The four types of pastry distributed throughout the calendar of the Holy Spirit festivities on the island of Pico are bolos de véspera (flat bread stamped with religious symbols), pães de água, pães doces, and rosquilhas.
This popular devotion originates in moments of deep distress caused by the earthquakes that have struck the island over the years, continuing the worship brought from the mainland. The people invoked divine intervention to calm nature and find comfort.
